THE ARTIST

Patricia Cano is a Canadian-Peruvian singer/songwriter/performer born and raised in Patricia CanoSudbury, ON, whose professional singing career began in 2001 when she started touring with Tomson Highway.  To this day, they perform “Cree Cabaret” together, traveling the world with two different cabarets:  the first being an evening of songs and stories from two of his plays, and the second cabaret being made up of 12 love songs, music and lyrics by Tomson Highway, and in no less than four languages: English, French, Spanish and Cree!

From 2003 to 2007, Patricia worked as a musical assistant and actor with Le Théâtre du Soleil, the prestigious Paris-based theatre company, touring to many of the world’s major theatre festivals.  In 2006, she was sent to Seoul, South Korea to study traditional Korean singing & drumming with a voice ‘Master’ for a period of three months, an experience that led her to choosing a musical path.  In 2007/2008, Patricia spent six months in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil singing and working alongside her musical partner, Carlos Bernardo.

In 2009, Patricia wrote and recorded her first album entitled “This is the New World” on which nine out of twelve songs are original compositions, composed in collaboration with Carlos Bernardo, and in four languages.  The other three songs are beautiful traditional pieces: two Afro-Peruvian songs, and one samba.

Patricia sings in seven languages, but for this first album she composed in those languages closest to her, all of which are found on the continent – North and South – of the New World:  French, Spanish, English and Portuguese.  And though the album has been labeled WORLD MUSIC, the music itself is rooted in the Americas, born out of a conversation between traditional rhythms of the south, like samba and the Peruvian festejo, and more modern styles of the north, like Jazz, Blues, Soul, and Folk.

THE TRAVELLING VOICE

Patricia Cano is a Canadian singer/songwriter born to Peruvian parents whose musical education has been nurtured by an astonishing multiplicity of references, something this album establishes from the very first track.  Notable are the influences of Brazilian music (the Brazilian guitarist Carlos Bernardo is featured in the album credits as co-author of many of the songs), the Peruvian “festejo” rhythm, as well as Jazz, among other less immediate influences.  The result is an elegant exercise in musical syncretism in which Cano´s diaphanous voice shines bright, a voice we will most certainly hear more about in the future.  An auspicious debut!  ( Raúl Cachay Alegría)
