Services to the Mineral Industry

MERC provides the following expertise to the mineral exploration industry:

  • Mineralogy and Crystallography: mineral identification; chemical and crystallographic characterization; mineralogical applications in exploration (pathfinder minerals); applications in mineral processing
  • Whole-Rock Geochemistry: major and trace element analysis via wavelength- and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS); inductively-coupled argon plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES); inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS); thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS); and flame emission, graphite-furnace, or hydride generation atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS)
  • Mineral Chemistry: electron probe microanalysis via wavelength- and energy-dispersive X-ray emission spectrometry (XRES); analysis of mineral separates via above whole-rock techniques
  • Exploration and Applied Geochemistry: lithological characterization; geochemical applications in exploration (indicator and pathfinder elements); applications in mineral processing
  • Volcanology, Petrogenesis, and Metallogenesis: physical volcanology of ultramafic, mafic, intermediate, and felsic volcanic rocks; petrogenesis and metallogenesis of mafic and ultramafic intrusive rocks; metamorphic petrogenesis of mafic and ultramafic rocks; sedimentary petrology
  • Exploration Geology: geological and geochemical exploration methodology; exploration programme design and execution: drill siting, core logging, geological and stratigraphic interpretations
  • Sedimentary Framework of Ore Deposits and Industrial Minerals
  • Ore Deposit Models: geological, genetic, and exploration models for magmatic Fe-Ni-Cu-(PGE) sulphide deposits, volcanic-associated hydrothermal massive Cu-Zn-Pb sulphide deposits, mesothermal lode Au deposits
